Steven Dale Masters

Steven Dale Masters, of Groesbeck, passed away at Baylor Scott and White Hospital in Waco on Thursday, Feb. 16, 2023, at age 51.

Graveside services were held on Sunday, February 19, 2023, at the Pavilion in Faulkenberry Cemetery, with Reverend Tracy Sims of the Central Baptist Church of Thornton officiating.

Steven was born on March 15, 1971, to Gary Fred Masters and Brenda Joyce Masters in Bryan, and he grew up in Thornton. In high school, he played baseball but his major love was football. He was “All-State” Punter and held the “hang time” record for many years. Steven graduated from Groesbeck High School in the Class of 1989. Steven attended TSTI in Waco to become a licensed diesel and heavy equipment mechanic.

Steven was united in marriage with Melissa Marie McBay on February 12, 1994 at the First Baptist Church in Groesbeck. They lived in Lake Dallas, and he was employed as a mechanic in the Dallas area with Healthtronics.

Steven and Melissa and their daughters returned to Groesbeck, and he has been employed with Luminant for the past thirteen years, first at Big Brown in Fairfield and later at the Kosse Mine. He was a mechanic on the diesel locomotives and rail cars.

Steven was a “jack-of-all trades,” including carpentry or electrical work. He could take care of any problems that needed work. He involved his daughters also, teaching them to change oil as early as 8 years old, and to change the tires. He expected them to know everything, and he was very particular in his own work. His girls were his world, and he wanted to make sure they and Melissa got whatever they wanted.

Steven had been a cancer survivor for eighteen years. He loved to joke with people all the time, and he was a “magnet” in his personality. Whoever met him loved him.

Steven was preceded in death by his parents, Gary Fred and Brenda Masters; his grandparents, Fred and Betty Masters and Oliver and Desi Kinney; uncles, Chesley Masters, Larry Joe Masters and Ray Kinney; his cousin (who called him Uncle Steven), Remington Masters; and his fatherin- law and mother-in-law, Raymond and Bobbie McBay.

He is survived by his wife, Melissa Masters; daughter, Kylee Masters and her fiancé, Bryce Huff; and daughter, Madison “Maddi” Masters, all of Groesbeck; sister, Lori Masters and her partner, Kelley Sherrard of Corsicana; sister, Dena Masters of Wortham; and sister, Staci Masters and her partner, Alan Stinnett of Mexia.

Included in his large family are his aunts and uncles: Mason and Debbie Masters, Mike and Debbie Masters, Dianne Masters and Scarlett Toliver, Debbie and Dennis Minchew, Billie Masters, Martha and Charles Cannefax, Doug and Melba Kinney and Karin Kinney.

His nieces and nephews are: Lauren and Chelcie Gist and son, Corbin Grigg; Camden, Tanner, Jaxon and Layton Stinnett of Mexia; and many, many more of the Masters’ family.

He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Mike McBay and his wife Aleece of Groesbeck; and sisterin- law, Melinda and her husband Zene Renfroe of Corinth; and nieces and nephews, Alison and her husband Ranjeev Teelock, Chris and his wife Meagan McBay, Falon Renfroe, Mikayla Renfroe and many other extended McBay family.
