Rick L. Schlitt
On Saturday, May 14, 2022, Rick L. Schlitt, loving husband and father, passed away at the age of 66. He was born in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, but for the last 10 years has called Lake Limestone his home.
Rick attended Catholic grade school and graduated from Central High School where he was student body president. After graduating from Southeast Missouri State University, Rick accepted a job with John Deere in Iowa. It was a little too cold for him there, so he went to work for Honeywell in Florida and Arizona, where he also completed his MBA. He left in 2001 to join USAA in San Antonio. In 2012, Computerworld magazine named Rick one of the Premier 100 IT Leaders. He retired from USAA as the Senior Vice President of IT Operations.
Rick was an avid fisherman and was happiest when he was out fishing for crappie with Jane and their dog, Lucy. He was willing to take anyone fishing in his “honey hole” as long as they didn’t fronabarger him (inside joke). He also enjoyed playing golf with the neighbors, camping in Utah, and hanging out with family.
Rick’s most cherished times were when he spent time with his grandchildren. It didn’t matter whether he was teaching them to fish, letting them win at Old Maid, playing with them in the sandbox or teaching them to drive the golf cart, his grandchildren always brightened his day. He cherished their hugs, kisses, and love for Papa.
Anyone who knew Rick was touched by his humor, big smile, and infectious laugh, but it was his trust in God throughout his battle with cancer that was a true inspiration to everyone. With support from his beloved fellow parishioners at St. Mary Catholic Church and love from family and friends, he taught us all how to address adversity with courage and a positive attitude.
Left to cherish wonderful memories of him are his loving wife, Jane, mother, Betty Dumas, uncle, Msgr. Harry Schlitt, three brothers Ron and his wife Pandora, John and his wife Beth, and Randy, along with his three children, Adam Vickery, Kyle Schlitt, and Cori Maldonado, his two stepchildren, Matthew Boehm and Melanie Lugo, and nine beautiful grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his father, John, brother, Roger, and sister, Renda Clark.
Visitation will be held on Monday, May 23 from 5-6 p.m. at St. Mary Parish Hall in Mexia, followed by Rosary Service at St. Mary Church. A funeral Mass will be held Tuesday, May 24 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary Church.
