After living in Dallas and Personville, they purchased a farm in Shiloh, Texas in 1962 which would be their home until 1977. While Jesse owned and operated Mexia Credit Company, Mary worked at home and was involved in every aspect of her family’s life. After Jesse’s untimely death at 51, Mary continued to run Mexia Credit Company for a short time. A tragic car accident claimed the life of her youngest son, Monte, in 1980. She later worked for the City of Mexia until retiring.
Mary enjoyed sewing, gardening, playing in various bridge clubs and was an avid golfer working in many capacities for the Women’s Golf Association. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Mexia since 1962, serving in various capacities including youth ministry, benevolence, Vacation Bible school, Women’s Ministry program and as a seamstress for the annual Easter pageant. In later years, she was an active volunteer with Hospice. Mary traveled extensively with church groups, women’s groups, friends, school groups and a beloved niece, Kelly Taylor, visiting five of the seven continents. She also volunteered on medical missions through Baylor University with teams let by the late Dr. Charles Shellenberger and the late Dr. Pat McSpadden.
