Jean Fae Wren Huckabee
Jean Fae Wren Huckabee, passed away peacefully at her home and ranch with her family by her side on Thursday, August 1, 2024, at the age of 88. We are saddened, and yet we rejoice in knowing she is healthy and whole again.
Visitation with the family will be held from 9:30-10:15 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 10, in the Fellowship Hall of the Kosse Methodist Church. Funeral services will follow at 10:30 a.m. in the sanctuary with Pastor Maureen Day officiating. Burial will be at Ebenezer Cemetery.
Jean was born Aug. 16, 1935, in San Antonio, Texas to Richard and Willa Mae (Coward) Wren. She was the oldest of three sisters. Her family relocated from San Antonio to Brownsville when she was in kindergarten due to her father’s job transfer with Eastern Airlines. She attended school in Brownsville through 5th grade when another job transfer took her family to Houston.
During her high school years, she was a member of the International Order of Rainbow for Girls which is affiliated with Eastern Star. There she was awarded the honor of Worthy Advisor, which was the highest level of achievement that could be earned. In 1953, Jean graduated from Stephen F. Austin High School in Houston.
In 1955, she married her high school sweetheart, Raymond Irvin Huckabee. Their first date was to the Eastwood Theatre in Houston. Together they opened their own business, J&R Services. In 1958, their first daughter Peggy was born, followed by Reda in 1960.
In 1969, Jean, Raymond, and their girls moved from the big city to their beloved ranch in Kosse. Jean was employed by Limestone County as the Director of the Kosse Senior Citizen Center. She also served on the Groesbeck ISD Board of Trustees for two terms, ending in 1979. She loved attending all of her daughters’ sports and band activities. Everyone knew what an avid sports fan she was (and that is putting it mildly!). She loved her Houston Astros and followed all the collegiate teams of her daughters’ and grandchildrens’ alma maters. She was a longtime member of Kosse Methodist Church, and a loyal member of the Ladies Study Group often referred to as their “Cheerleader”. Known affectionately as “Nana” to her four grandchildren, she was extremely proud of them all and their accomplishments. She loved all her family immensely and each one unconditionally. Her parting words were, “I want to let my family know how much I love them.” Her life was evident of that, and we all knew and were blessed by her love. She was the epitome of the following scriptures:
1 Corinthians 13:1 “...but have not love, I am nothing.”
1 Corinthians 13:13 “...the greatest of these is love.”
Jean is survived by her daughter Dr. Peggy Huckabee Coffer and her husband Kendell of Kosse; daughter Reda Huckabee Kay and husband Doug of Granbury; grandchildren Kristin Kay Brown and husband Eric of Austin; Dr. Brice Coffer of Salt Lake City, Utah; Major Marshall Kay USAF of Fort Walton Beach, Florida; Shannon Coffer BSN RN of Denver, Colorado; sister Nancy Browning of Pearland; and sister-in-law Eileen Huckabee of Cypress; and numerous nieces and nephews and their families. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 64 years, Raymond Irvin Huckabee, her parents, sister Dorothy Martin, brother-in-law Darwin Huckabee, and sister-in-law Dolores Allen. Pallbearers are Kendell Coffer, Doug Kay, Brice Coffer, Marshall Kay, Eric Brown, and Ronny Huckabee. Honorary pallbearers are James Railsback and Allen Long. If desired, memorials can be made to the Kosse Methodist Church Ladies Study Group, Ebenezer Cemetery, or a charity of your choice.
