Jane Cathleen “Janie” Gibson
Jane Cathleen “Janie” Gibson, of Groesbeck, very unexpectedly passed away peacefully in her sleep at home on Friday, February 28, 2020, at age 59.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 3, at the Groesbeck Funeral Home Chapel, with Sheriff Dennis Wilson officiating, and music by Stacy Duffield. Burial followed in Lost Prairie Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Cody deCordova, John Bankhead, Mark Duke, Ricky Soliz, Chase Logan and Jimmy Fewell, and her nephews served as honorary pallbearers.
Janie was born April 5, 1960 to James Benton McGilvray and Mildred Christine McGilvray in Groesbeck, where she grew up as the seventh of 10 children. The family moved into town when she was in fifth grade, and Janie loved swimming at the Groesbeck City Pool. She worked as a lifeguard at the pool during the four summers of high school, and she graduated in the Class of 1978.
Janie was united in marriage with Terry Mark Gibson on July 27, 1979 at the home of Dip and Jackie Crowson. They lived in or near Groesbeck the rest of their lives.
After graduation, Janie had worked for a short time at the Mexia State School Canteen, and then had worked as a telephone operator before direct dialing ended the demand for that work. She then worked a year or so as a dental assistant to Dr. Richard Collins, until deciding to stay at home as a full-time Mom for Adam and later their second son Phillip. Before the boys were born, she had more time to ride with Terry when he was hauling cattle.
Then, as the boys grew, she was not only a full-time mom at home, but she was fully involved serving as room mother for both sons and doing some substitute teaching. She attended every football and basketball game and track meet for the boys, and also their rodeo events. Janie spent countless hours keeping her three cowboys in clean clothes and fed at all hours of the day and night. She continued to enjoy riding with Terry in the pasture every spring to see the baby calves.
Janie continued her love of the water during their family tradition every summer for 37 years, spending time at South Padre Island, staying in the same motel every year. Other times of enjoyment for Janie were going shopping with her sister Cathy to antique and junk stores. She also loved working in her flower beds around the house. Janie was a dedicated grandmother once the boys had families of their own. If she had not seen the grandchildren in a couple of days, she was calling Adam and Phillip to see how soon they could bring them to her house or she could go to see them.
Janie was preceded in death by her parents and other extended family.
She is survived by her husband of forty years, Terry Mark Gibson of Groesbeck; son and daughter-in-law, Adam and Candace Gibson of Groesbeck; son and daughterin-law, Phillip and Jennifer Gibson of Hewitt; five grandchildren: Mylie, Hudson, Hadi, Blakely, and Clancy Ty; and her nine brothers and sisters and their spouses: Cathy and Charlie King of Groesbeck, Joe Marvin McGilvray of Groesbeck, Jimmy and Connie McGilvray of Mexia, Bernard and Carolyn McGilvray of Groesbeck, Tony and Bonnie McGilvray of Robinson, Carrie and Jesse Faglie of Medina, Carol and Darrell McLean of Groesbeck, Gary and Leeza McGilvray of Mesquite, and Melissa and B.J. Monk of Weatherford; and many nieces and nephews, and other extended family.
