Wyman Durwood Harriman

Wyman Durwood Harriman, 92, of Waxahachie, Texas, passed away on Saturday, Nov. 16, 2024.
Wyman was born on Feb. 4, 1932, in Farrar, Texas, in Limestone County, to Grace Bond and William Joseph Harriman. He attended school in Fair Oaks, where he played on the varsity basketball team and earned a scholarship to play at Westminster Junior College. After college, he joined the U.S. Navy and was stationed at the Dallas Naval Air Station in Grand Prairie, Texas, where he worked on F-4U Corsair airplanes. Wyman had a love for flying, so this was a great opportunity for him.
While serving in the Navy, Wyman’s father was diagnosed with cancer. As the oldest child, he received an honorable discharge to return home and assist his mother in caring for his four younger siblings on the family farm. Afterward, Wyman began working for Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. in Huntsville, Texas, which provided a steady job to support his family.
In 1953, he met Kathryn Parmley in Groesbeck, Texas, and the two were married on January 1, 1954. They moved to Huntsville, where Wyman worked as an unlocated lineman, which required the family to relocate frequently. In 1957, they moved to Waxahachie, Texas, with their son, Steve, after Wyman transferred to a new position. They made Waxahachie their home, where they raised their children, Steve and Leah, and became active members of Ferris Heights United Methodist Church.
As their children grew, Wyman and Kathryn supported them in their school and extracurricular activities. Wyman was involved with the Waxahachie Indians Booster Club, serving as president for a time, and helped set up communications for the coaches of the high school baseball and football teams. Known for his problem-solving skills, Wyman had a reputation for being able to fix anything. If he didn’t know how to fix something at first, he would research it and return to repair it. His patience and willingness to help others defined his character throughout his life.
In 2020, Wyman and Kathryn were honored by the Waxahachie Hall of Fame as "Friends of Athletics." Wyman was an outstanding husband, father, and friend, always ready to lend a hand to his coworkers at Bell Telephone or offer guidance to anyone who requested his advice.
Wyman had a passion for travel, and he and Kathryn spent 32 years visiting Corps of Engineer Parks in their travel trailer. They also enjoyed long vacations and took annual two-week trips across the United States. After covering much of the country, they began traveling internationally with the Citizen’s National Bank’s Tour Group, visiting Switzerland, Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii, Alaska, and China. In fact, just a month after the 9/11 attacks, Wyman traveled to China, where he had the opportunity to climb the Great Wall. He retired at age 58 after 38 years and 7 months with Southwestern Bell.
After retirement, Wyman continued to serve his church and help friends and family with repairs. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Mary Kate Wills, his brother Jerry Don Harriman, and his brothers-in-law Billy Wills, George Moore and Barry Blackwell.
Wyman is survived by his wife of 71 years, Kathryn Harriman; his son Steve Harriman and wife Cindy; his daughter Leah Boguskie and husband Jerry; his triplet grandchildren, Beau Harriman, Haley Raub (husband Zach), and Suzanne Dvorak (husband Brandon); his sisters, Colleen Blackwell and Patricia Moore; his sister-in-law Reva Harriman; and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider making a donation in Wyman’s honor at Ferris Heights United Methodist Church, 108 Center Street, Waxahachie, TX 75165.
The family will receive visitors on Thursday, Nov. 21, 2024 from 12:30 until 2 p.m. at Boze Mitchell McKibbin Funeral Home Chapel in Waxahachie, Texas. Funeral service will follow on the same day, at 2 p.m. Interment at Hillcrest Cemetery, in Waxahachie, Texas. Arrangements are under the direction of Boze Mitchell McKibbin Funeral Home, 511 W. Main St., Waxahachie, TX.
The family would like to thank all who were part of Wyman’s care at Baylor Scott & White Medical Center for their expertise, dedication and care they provided.
