Hilda "Guerna" (Felan) Contreras

Hilda "Guerna" (Felan) Contreras, a longtime resident of Groesbeck, passed away at her home on Wednesday, April 17, 2024.
The visitation and recital of the Rosary was Monday, April 22, in the Groesbeck Funeral Home Chapel.
Funeral Mass was celebrated on Tuesday, April 23, at St. Mary's Catholic Church of Mexia, with Father Benjie officiating, followed by the Rite of Christian Burial at Faulkenberry Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Luis Alberto Oviedo, Artist Nevels, Orlando Oviedo, Ignacio Contreras, Daniel Lomas, and Juan Carlos Galvan.
Hilda was born Aug. 21, 1951, in Meridian, TX. to Margarito Felan and Augustina (Gonzales) Felan.  She spent her childhood and teenage years in Waco and has lived in Groesbeck the past 50 years.
Hilda and her husband, Pascual owned and operated Contreras Wholesale Nursery for many years. She was the bookkeeper but also would not hesitate to climb up in a big truck with a long trailer loaded with trees to deliver them to the Dallas area.
Hilda worked for MAXIMUS as a state contractor with Medicaid and was currently in her 25th. Year. She was a beloved team member of Region 7 Outreach and worked as an Outreach Counselor during her 25 years of service.  She was the heart and soul of the communities that she served, often leading meetings in the 6 counties she worked in.
Hilda was recognized for her contributions by her community partners and by MAXIMUS.  She was bilingual and throughout the years she helped with Spanish translation.  There was no task too small for her or no distance too far for her to travel to help someone.  Her passion was to help people and it was evident in how hard she worked in serving Medicaid recipients and finding resources, such as shelter food & childcare.
Hilda loved to help people and cook for everyone. She opened her home many nights for family and others needing her help to wait for her family meal to be completed and then she worked tirelessly to help them. She enjoyed being with her family and keeping traditions was very important to her. Also, she liked to make occasional trips to the casinos.
Hilda was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Gloria Arroyo, and brothers, Johnny Felan and Geronimo Felan.
She is survived by her husband, Pascual N. Contreras; seven children, Julio Cesar Contreras, Nancy Bradley and her husband Chris; Pascual Contreras and his wife Tara, Jose Martinez, Antonio J. Contreras, and husband Jody, Jessica N. Arredondo and husband Juan A., and Kayla Walton and husband Buddy.
Her grandchildren are Kennedy and Camryn Bradley, Taylor Baldwin, Olivia and Gabbi Contreras, Alanna M. Contreras, Juan Jr. Arredondo, Brian A. Arredondo, Santos D. Arredondo, Johnathan Arredondo, Isaac Arredondo, and Maddy and Jensen Walton; and also four great grandkids.
Her siblings are Michele de la Cruz, Mathis Felan and wife Sheila, sister-in-law, Margaret Felan, and brother-in-law, Mayolo Arroyo.  On the Contreras side, her sisters-in-law are Maria Socorro Oviedo, Graciela Galvan, and her husband, Carmen Gonzales, Ofelia Gonzales, Josefina Mares, and brother-in-law, Jesus Contreras and his wife.  She is also survived by her beloved nieces and nephews and her god-children.
