Unbound Now Addresses Human Trafficking at Parent University Event

Early Intervention Specialist Pam Stone and Director of Programs Bronda Hayes from Unbound Now addressed human trafficking at the February Parent University event at H.O. Whitehurst Elementary on Wednesday, Feb. 21. Unbound Now, a nonprofit organization, aims to end human trafficking through outreach, training, and youth prevention, providing advocacy resources for survivors.
Stone emphasized that human trafficking is a broader issue than commonly understood, noting it often involves individuals who have built relationships with victims, rather than random abductions. She stressed the importance of awareness, advising children to "Don't be afraid, be aware." Stone shared examples of traffickers, including a businessman, a teacher, and a high school cheerleader, all from Texas, highlighting that trafficking can occur in small communities.
The COVID-19 pandemic shifted trafficking tactics, with a 125% increase in online predator activity and a 70% decrease in recruitment in public spaces. Stone advised setting social media profiles to private and cautioned against adding strangers. She identified Discord as a common app for predators and recommended its deletion. Stone also emphasized that trafficking affects all genders, not just girls and women, and discussed grooming stages and signs.
Stone and Hayes shared survivor stories and stressed the importance of having a safety plan, including memorizing a trusted adult's contact information. To report trafficking or suspicious activity, they provided the National Human Trafficking Hotline (1-888-373-7888) and text number, text “Info” or “Help” to BeFree (233-733) and the Unbound Now Crisis Response Line (254-414-0814).
Established in 2012, Unbound Now has expanded to 11 service areas globally, aiding over 2,100 individuals. According to their website, they have helped 498 people already this year. To support their cause or access educational materials, visit unboundnow.org
