Nelda Sue (Clay) Hitchcock
Nelda Sue (Clay) Hitchcock of Cypress, Texas passed away on Monday, October 24, 2022, at Spring Cypress Senior Living Center in Cypress, Texas at the age of 85.
Graveside services were held Tuesday, November 1, 2022, at Faulkenberry Cemetery in Groesbeck, led by John Walls of Fairfield Baptist Church of Cypress.
Nelda was born September 22, 1937, in Groesbeck to Herbert Steve Clay and Lillian Lucille (Redden) Clay. She grew up in Groesbeck and graduated from Groesbeck High School in the Class of 1956. She participated in several activities in high school including band, and she was a cheerleader. She was actively involved in the First Baptist Church of Groesbeck, and she went on to attend college at Baylor in Waco, Texas.
Nelda Sue married Jim Bob Hitchcock of Atlanta, Texas. They married in Groesbeck on March 5, 1960, then they moved to New York City for Jim’s profession. Jim’s career took them to Indonesia and the Island of Sumatra where Nelda was brave enough to have her first-born child, Leah. After several years and with the addition of 2 more children, Craig and Todd, the family moved to Singapore and finally ended up in Houston, Texas.
Nelda worked for Cy-Fair ISD in Cypress, Texas for many years as her children attended school in the same district where Nelda worked, and she retired from Cy-Fair ISD in 1989.
Nelda had a passion for golf and spent many of her retired years on the golf courses in Fulshear, Lakeway, and Granbury. Nelda loved her Dallas Cowboys, win, lose or draw. She loved going to Canton with her lifelong friends from Groesbeck. Nelda enjoyed attending the Groesbeck Homecoming every year and enjoyed socializing and partaking in all the events related to homecoming.
Nelda attended Lakeside Baptist Church in Granbury, where she volunteered services for various organizations within the church, and in later years attended Fairfield Baptist Church in Cypress.
Nelda was preceded in death by her parents, Lucille and Herbert Clay of Groesbeck; husband, Jim Bob Hitchcock of Granbury; sister, Robbie Clay Meeker of Pottsboro; and brother, Charles Clay of Dallas.
She is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Leah Hitchcock Webster and husband Brad of Cypress; son, Craig Hitchcock of Ft. Worth; son, Todd Hitchcock of Houston; granddaughter, Alexis Hitchcock Kelleher and husband Shane of Ft. Worth; and grandson, Clay Hitchcock of Cleburne.
The family would like to thank all those involved in Nelda’s life, including Spring Cypress Assisted Living in Cypress, and Choice Hospice of Houston, Texas.
