Wynell (Shields) Stone
Wynell (Shields) Stone of Kosse passed away Thursday, June 4, 2020, at Baylor Scott & White - Hillcrest in Waco following a brief illness at age 85.
Funeral services were conducted on Monday, June 8, 2020, in the Groesbeck Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Floyd Stanley (Kosse Church of Christ) and Bro. Glen Easterly (Old Union Church of Christ) officiating. Burial followed at Criswell Cemetery.
Pallbearers were John Roy, Bradley Milstead, Jason Milstead, Charles “Bubba” Stone, Randy Hunter, Cammie Henderson, Dean Currie, and Deryl Wade Shields.
Wynell was born September 24, 1934, to Joseph Preston Shields and Neoma Pearl Price Shields in Detoura, Texas in northern Limestone County. As a child, her family moved to Mart, Texas, and then to Groesbeck, Texas where she graduated high school in 1953.
She married Ronald Clifton “Bud” Stone November 3, 1952. Over the years she worked in a dry goods store, grocery store, the Falls County Tax Office, Limestone County Tax office, Limestone County Clerk office in Groesbeck. She was the secretary for attorney L.L. Garin in Groesbeck. In the early 1970’s she also kept books for their Texaco Gas Station business located in Kosse, Texas. She and Ronald started their business, Stone’s Auto Supply in Jewett, Texas in 1983 and she helped run the business until retirement in 1999.
Wynell and Ronald lived in Kosse, Texas from 1963 to 1984 and then moved to Lake Limestone where they resided until 1999, at which time they moved back to Kosse onto the farm where they raised cattle. They both loved to fish and travel the United States in their travel trailer. Wynell loved to dance, play dominoes, and “42” and they were in a monthly “88” group from the Old Union/ Oletha area for almost 25 years. If you got Wynell as a partner you were almost sure to win!
Wynell was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ where she was an active worker and devout Christian. While living at Lake Limestone she was instrumental in organizing the Old Union Church of Christ and in later years was an active member of the Kosse Church of Christ. She was also a member of the McKenzie Cemetery Association and Criswell Cemetery Association.
Wynell is preceded in death by her parents, her daughter Rhonda Renee Stone Callahan, sister Davie Joy Shields Gilmore, and step great-grandson Jackson Wyatt Lindner.
Wynell is survived by her husband of 67 years Ronald (Bud) Stone; son Max Lynn Stone and wife, Carol of Marlin; granddaughters, Tonia Lynn Stone Allen and husband Ryan, of Kingwood; Megan Lee Stone Bailey and husband, Travis of Meridian, Idaho; step-granddaughter SuDonna “Suzy” Hicks Lindner and husband Donny of Giddings; great-grandchildren, Audrey Elizabeth Baquet, Gweneth Ann Bailey, and Judson Rhett Lindner. Also, she is survived by her sister Beth Shields Dawson and husband, David, of Rockport; brothers Garvis Preston Shields and wife Dell of Waco and Basil Price Shields and wife, Elaine of Seguin; brother-in-law Billy Gayle Gilmore of Tokio; numerous nieces and nephews; and many relatives in the Stone family.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Wynell may be sent to the Kosse Church of Christ, or McKenzie Cemetery Association, or Criswell Cemetery Association.
