Benny Wayne Lucas
Benny Wayne Lucas, longtime respected educator, passed away February 24, 2020 in Groesbeck, Texas at the age of 88. Funeral services will be held Thursday, Feb. 27 at the Blair Stubbs Chapel. Joe Lucas, Ben Lucas and Chuck Durham will officiate and interment will follow in the Shiloh Cemetery.
David Cartwright, Benjie Cartwright, Seth Alpert, Chris Murphy, Jonathan Durham, Zach Birkner, Larry Joiner and Eddie Plummer, Jr. will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Joe Lucas, Jr., Lance Lucas and Larry Wilson.
Benny graduated from Mexia High School in 1948, a member of the undefeated regional championship Blackcat football team. In 1952, he graduated from Abilene Christian College and later earned a Master of Science degree from Texas Tech University. Benny taught school for 19 years in Colorado and Texas and was an administrator in Mexia ISD schools for another 19 years.
Benny married the love of his life, Nell (Daugherty) Lucas in 1952. He was a devoted husband and loved his family, leading them and those around him by his good example. He was a member of the Church of Christ and preached the gospel in West Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, and later in Thornton and Shiloh, Texas.
Farming and growing peaches was something Benny truly enjoyed. He had a special love for young people. Respect and support for those around him were important to “Mr. Lucas” and he was a role model for many students in learning how to truly succeed in life.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Wayne and Marie Randall Lucas; wife, Wilna Nell Lucas and sister, Patricia Ann Prince.
Benny is survived by his four children: Benny Lucas, Jr., Kathleen Reaves, Wilna Durham, and Anna Alpert; brother, Joe Lucas and a host of grandchildren and. great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
