Goats bitten by Bulldogs, 39-34

Groesbeck (3-1) turned a one-point, 14-13, halftime deficit and built a 13-point fourth-quarter lead. The football team were unable to hold it as Crockett knocked the Goats off the ranks of the unbeaten with a 39-34 victory, Friday, Sept. 16 at Monte Jack Driskell Stadium in Crockett.

Chris Cox stood out as the Goat’s workhorse at running back finishing with 3 touchdowns (2 rushing, 1 receiving) performance. He rushed for 157 yards on 30 attempts.

Trent Platt took the snaps under center in place of the injured Allen Lewis and fired off 3 touchdown passes. Cox, Matthew Valentine, and Anthony Lewis caught touchdown passes from Platt.

After being down 14-13 at the halftime break, the Goats scored touchdowns on two of their first three possessions of the second half and were up 27-14 with 10:31 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Crockett answered with two scores on their following two possessions while forcing Groesbeck to two consecutive punts. Crockett trailed 27-26

On the second Groesbeck punt, Crockett managed to block it and recovered the ball on their own 19-yard line with 1:37 remaining in the fourth quarter.

In the very next play, Crockett converted a 19-yard touchdown score giving them the 32-27 lead after a failed PAT.

Groesbeck received the ball with 1:19 remaining and on the first play, Crockett’s Zandric Anderson picked off a Groesbeck pass and returned it for a touchdown, putting the Bulldogs up 39-27.

The Goats managed to score again and recovered the ensuing onside kick but were unable to score on their final drive as the game clock struck triple zeros.

Up next the Goats cross the Navasota river to renew their Battle of the River rivalry with Mexia (0-4) on Friday, Sept. 26 at 7:30 p.m. at Mexia’s Blackcat Field.
