Homecoming approaching Sept. 15-16
Homecoming is fast approaching - September 15-16 and the Groesbeck Ex-Students are hard at work to bring the community a full two days of festivities.
While details are still being finalized and coming in, the events planned for homecoming this year are proving to be a big one with the initial reports already showing a great turnout for the parade and as always an even better turnout to root on the Goats on Friday night.
Groesbeck Ex-Students give annual honor awards each year to a few individuals, as well as choose honorees for the parade floats, a parade marshal, host a lunch, and assist in 50-year diploma presentations and pre-game ceremonies.
This year’s honor float has been chosen as ‘all current and past FFA members and their staff’, they will have their own float in the parade.
The Exes chose Tom Hawkins the 2023 Parade Homecoming Parade Marshal.
Sometimes known as ‘Mr. Homecoming’ Tom Hawkins has been a long-time citizen of the community and involved in all organizations and boards as well as was the previous owner and Editor Emeritus of the Groesbeck Journal.
The Groesbeck Exstudents also select an annual Ex-Student Homecoming Queen, they are announced at the pregame ceremony on homecoming night.
Mr. & Mrs. Homecoming is being chosen this year by the Blackshear-Washington Alumni Association and will be announced soon.
The special honor classes for this year are the Groesbeck High School Class of 1973. The classes will receive their 50-year diplomas following the homecoming lunch on Saturday, and will also be honored during pregame ceremonies on Friday.
Currently reported homecoming festivities begin on Friday and go into Saturday with reunions and more.
On Friday, Sept.. 15 from 3:00 to 5:30 p.m. a homecoming reception for Homecoming Parade Marshal Tom Hawkins will be held at the Groesbeck Journal, 115 N. Ellis, Groesbeck. Come enjoy refreshments and visit with Mr. Hawkins. Tours of the old Linotypes and the press will be available during this time.
The pregame ceremonies will kick off at 6:30 p.m. with a game time of 7:30 p.m. with the Groesbeck vs. Crockett game at Goat Stadium.
On Saturday, Sept. 16 at 10:30 a.m. the Groesbeck Homecoming Parade will take place in downtown Groesbeck. For more information or to place an entry in the parade contact Lisa Stewart at 254-2923155.
Following the parade, The Groesbeck Ex-Student lunch is planned to start at 11 a.m. at Enge Washington Cafeteria. Lunch will be sandwich plates with chips, fruit/veggies, and a drink for $12, catered by Limestone Nutrition of Groesbeck. All proceeds will benefit the Groesbeck Ex-Students Association and the annual scholarships.
The Blackshear Washington High School Historical Dedication and Unveiling will take place at 1:00 p.m. between the Red Goat Cafe and the gym. A reception will follow with a special presentation at the Enge Washington Gym (Old Jr High White Gym) An honor will be held for all Qualifying and State players (that either qualified for State or went to State) in any sport in high school. As well as a special presentation honoring an annual community honoree in the community.
