Limestone County Joint Election - May 7

As election results rolled in at the close of polls on Saturday, May 7, a total of 1,146 ballots were cast in Limestone County. 

Early voting results showed a total of 884 ballots cast before election day, a small number for the county and an even lower turnout for election day.  

Early Voting results reported were the main of all votes and can be seen at the conclusion of this article.

State Propositions

State of Texas Proposition 1 - "The constitutional amendment authorizing the legislature to provide for the reduction of the amount of a limitation on the total amount of ad valorem taxes that may be imposed for general elementary and secondary public school purposes on the residence homestead of a person who is elderly or disabled to reflect any statutory reduction from the preceding tax year in the maximum compressed rate of the maintenance and operations taxes imposed for those purposes on the homestead."

For (Limestone County) 982 votes, 89.11 percent 

Against  (Limestone County) 120 votes, 10.89 percent 

 

State of Texas Proposition 2

"The constitutional amendment increasing the amount of the residence homestead exemption from ad valorem taxation for public school purposes from $25,000 to $40,000."

For (Limestone County) 930 votes, 84.01 percent 

Against  (Limestone County) 177 votes, 15.99 percent 

 

Dawley named new Groesbeck Mayor, Cox new to council

The unopposed candidates declared elected for the City of Groesbeck were Mayor Matthew D. Dawley and council members Lee R. Cox, Tamikia Jackson and Sonia Selvera. They will each serve a two-year term. 

Proposition 1 (the reauthorization of the local sales and use tax in the City of Groesbeck, Texas at the rate of one-fourth of one percent to continue providing revenue for maintenance and repair of municipal streets.) 

Early voting results showed 33 votes, 80.49 percent in favor and 8 votes, 19.51 percent against. 

 

Hewitt, O’Neal, Gray maintain South Limestone Hospital District Board

Danny Hewitt lead with 308 votes, 28.87 percent, with Glenda Morris O’Neal (286 votes, 26.80 percent) and Arnold Gray (249 votes, 23.34 percent) taking the lead over Chase Logan in a tight race but overall Logan was left with the loss with 224 votes, 20.99 percent.  Each elected member will serve a 4-year term. 

 

Robinson elected Thornton Mayor; Masters, Noel take Thornton City Council council seats

Thornton Election Judge Cona Beth Hewitt reported two spots were up for election for Thornton City Council. Debbie Masters came out on top with 86 votes, with Jr. Noel following with 63 votes. Walter Hewitt trailed with 53 votes. 

In Thornton city mayor election, Charles Robinson won with 71 votes, and Kay Alston trailed with 56 votes.

Mexia ISD

Across the river in Mexia, the unofficial results reported at the closing counts for Mexia ISD Trustee Place 1 were 540 votes, 68.97 percent for WM. T. “Bud” Shamblin with the lead over Ms. Dee Cotton with 243 votes, 31.03 percent. 

Mexia ISD Trustee Place 3 showed W.H. (Bill) Lowry in the lead with 540 votes, 68.97 percent while Michael Elroy trailed with 288 votes, 36.73 percent. 

Each of the MISD terms will run for three years.

Against - 95 votes, 11.2 percent

State of Texas Proposition 2

For - 714 votes, 83.8 percent

Against - 138 votes, 16.2 percent

 

Proposition Groesbeck 

For - 33 votes, 80.49 percent

Against - 8 votes, 19.51 percent

 

SLHD Board Member

Arnold Gray - 146 votes, 23.62 percent

Glenda Morris O’Neal - 164 votes, 26.54 percent

Chase Logan - 127 votes, 20.55 percent

Danny Hewitt - 181 votes, 29.29 percent
