A Salute to Veterans, Local Events Planned

Veterans’ Day is a US federal holiday observed on November 11, honoring military veterans. It coincides with Armistice Day, which is celebrated in other countries to mark the anniversary of the end of World War I. Major hostilities of World War I formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918 when the Armistice with Germany went into effect. The United States originally acknowledged Armistice Day, along with other countries, to specifically honor military personnel who died during World War I. It was not until 1945 that World War II veteran Raymond Weeks suggested expanding the holiday to honor all veterans. This change was not made official until 1954 when Congress officially amended the name of the holiday from “Armistice” to “Veterans.” Since then, it has been a day to show appreciation for all who have served. Join our local celebrations honoring our veterans this weekend at any of the events below.
